Stanford University (officially Leland Stanford Junior University) is a private research university located in Stanford University, California, and is one of the most prestigious institutions in the world, with the number one ranking in many rankings and measures in the United States.

Stanford University was founded in 1885 by Leland Stanford, a former U.S. Senator from California and railroad magnate, and his wife, Jane Lathrop Stanford, in memory of their only child, Leland Stanford Jr., who had died of typhoid fever at the age of 15.

Stanford opened on October 1, 1891 for this coeducational, nonsectarian institution. The institution offers free education until the 1920’s. After World War II, Vice Chancellor Frederick Terman supported faculty and alumni in entrepreneurship to build self-sufficiency in the local industry known as Silicon Valley.

The main campus is located in the North Santa Clara Valley adjacent to Palo Alto and between San Jose and San Francisco. Other campus holdings, such as laboratories and nature reserves, are located outside the main campus. The campus covers 8,180 acres (3,310 ha), making it one of the largest in the United States. The university is also one of the top fundraising institutions in the country, becoming the first school to raise more than $1 billion a year.

Stanford’s academic strength is broad, with 40 administrations across its three undergraduate academic schools and four other professional schools. The university is one of two FBS private institutions with the 1st People’s Congress in the Pacific. The university has won 107 NCAA team championships, the most for second-most, the university has won 476 individual championships, the most in Division I, and has been awarded the NACDA Administration’s Trophy, recognizing the university as the overall athletic team’s best achievement, every year since 1994-1995.

Stanford College and alumni have founded many companies including Google, Hewlett-Packard, Nike, Sun Microsystems, Instagram and Yahoo, and companies founded by Stanford alumni produce more than $2.7 trillion in annual revenue, the equivalent of the 10th largest economy in the world.

The main campus

Stanford University is located on an 8,180-acre (3,310 ha) campus on the San Francisco Peninsula, in the northwest part of Santa Clara Valley (Silicon Valley) about 37 miles (60 km) southeast of San Francisco and about 20 miles (32 km) northwest of San Jose. In 2008, 60% of this land remained undeveloped. The main campus is adjacent to Palo Alto, bordered by El Camino Real, Stanford Street, Junipero, and Sand Hill Road. The university also operates in several remote locations.

The main campus of Stanford is the unincorporated census-designated place within Santa Clara County, although some of the university’s land (including the Stanford Shopping Center and Stanford Research Park) is in the Palo Alto city limits. The campus also includes much of the unincorporated land in San Mateo County, as well as in the city limits of Menlo Park (Stanford Hills neighborhood), Woodside, and Portola Valley.
